About Central Park Play Therapy

At Central Park Play Therapy, we believe every child deserves a place where they feel safe, understood, and free to grow. Our mission is to create a thoughtfully designed therapeutic environment where meaningful relationships, curiosity, and play become the foundation for skill building and lifelong emotional well-being.

We provide a safe, compassionate space encompassing your family’s culture and values within the therapeutic process. We provide exceptional, relationship-centered psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and families, recognizing that every child has a unique story, every family has inherent strengths, and every challenge presents an opportunity for growth.

Through evidence-based practice, developmentally-informed care, and the transformative power of play, we help children build emotional resilience, strengthen self-confidence, deepen relationships, and develop the skills needed to navigate life's complexities.

We are committed to partnering with families and others in a child’s community through every stage of their journey—offering compassionate guidance, clinical excellence, and a personalized approach that honors each child's individuality. Our goal is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to nurture confident, connected, and emotionally healthy children who can flourish at home, in school, and throughout their lives.

ABOUT OUR PRACTICE

Welcome to Central Park Play Therapy! We are a small group practice based out of New York, NY that specializes in therapeutic work with children, adolescents, and families. Our Clinical Director, Summer Sheridan-Zabre, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, avid podcast listener who moved to New York in 2001 and argues that she is a true New Yorker. When not in the office, she can be found rollerblading, convincing people to try her baked goods, or binge watching 90’s r&b videos. After over 25 years in the field, she built this practice to create a space where not only children and families can thrive, but therapists feel a sense of community in learning and growing from one another. Each therapist in the practice has their own unique qualities and experiences that lends to specific excellence in their respective niches. At Central Park Play Therapy, we believe great therapists deserve the same care they provide to others. Through individualized supervision, meaningful professional development, and actually fun team experiences, we cultivate a supportive community where therapists feel valued, connected, and inspired. Our goal isn't simply to help clinicians stay in the field—we aim to help them grow, thrive and love the work they do; and where they do it.

Our Commitment to Inclusion

At Central Park Play Therapy, we believe every child deserves to feel seen, valued, understood, and accepted exactly as they are today and empower them to become who they strive to be. Our practice is committed to creating a welcoming, affirming, and inclusive space where children and families from all backgrounds can feel safe to explore, grow, and heal. We honor the unique identities, cultures, family structures, abilities, experiences, and perspectives that each child brings into the therapy space. We recognize that children thrive when they are supported by caring adults who respect and celebrate their individuality. Our therapists are dedicated to providing culturally responsive, compassionate care that acknowledges the impact of a child’s environment, relationships, and lived experiences. We welcome and support children and families of all races, ethnicities, religions, gender identities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, abilities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and family configurations. Our practice ensures an accessible environment for all entering our space, which may include physical or other accommodations. We are committed to ongoing learning, reflection, and growth so that our practice remains a place where every child and family knows they belong. At Central Park Play Therapy, inclusion is more than a value—it is at the heart of how we connect, support, and care for every child and family we serve.

Summer Sheridan-Zabre

LCSW

Clinical Director

Summer, a licensed clinical social worker. My approach to psychotherapy is to focus on relationship building and play. I started my career after graduating from Syracuse University with a major in Social Work and a minor in Psychology. Shortly after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, I relocated to New York City and began working for the American Red Cross September 11 Recovery Program.

I went on to complete my master’s degree in social work at Fordham University with a specialization in children and families. While interning in a therapeutic nursery, I discovered my passion for social work in educational settings and spent over 15 years working as a school social worker and various special education and administrative roles.

I provide a warm, supportive environment where I help children and families address challenges such as managing emotions that impede growth, developing social skills, building a positive sense of self, and strengthening communication. My approach is rooted in relationship building and recognizing that every family is unique.

When I am not in the play room working, you can find me rollerblading in central park! All while listening to true crime podcasts and trying to get fellow park dwellers to high five me!

Julia Stawiski

LMSW

Julia joins Central Park Play Therapy after working with children as a therapist and educator for over twenty years. She started as an elementary and then nursery school teacher working in Washington Heights, including working in an all-outdoors forest program right in the heart of Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan! After becoming a clinical social worker, she worked in three different schools collaborating closely with students and their families as well as school staff.

Julia’s passion for working with children through a play-based, relational approach has supported her clients to quickly feel comfortable working alongside her! Julia believes that each client has their own unique goals that inform the work together in the therapeutic space and wants kids to feel empowered and confident upon terminating from therapeutic services. Empowered to understand, feel and manage their emotions, engage with others in healthy and happy ways, and overall just feel like they can better handle any curveball life throws at them!

When Julia was a kid she was an expert pogo stick jumper and feels strongly that she could still be a pogo stick champ!

Cordelia Johnson

BA, M.Ed., LCSW

Cordelia (BA, M.Ed., LCSW) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience as a therapist, school social worker, and educator. Her professional path began in the arts — she earned a degree in Art History from the University of Chicago and worked in the fashion industry. This creative foundation continues to shape her work today, particularly in how she uses expression, curiosity, and imagination to support healing.

Wanting to work more directly with people, Cordelia earned a Master’s degree in Education from Harvard University and returned to New York City to teach in both independent and cooperative school settings. As a teacher, she was drawn to supporting students and families whose needs extended beyond academics, which ultimately inspired her to pursue clinical training and earn a Master’s degree in Social Work from New York University.

Liana Smith-Murphy

LCSW-R, RPT-S

Liana joins Central Park Play Therapy with nearly 20 years of experience as a therapist supporting children and adolescents in New York City. She is keenly aware of the specific pressures, worries, and strengths the young people in this city manage.

After earning a bachelor's degree in psychology at Stony Brook University, Liana got a master's degree in social work from NYU. She started her career working with adults at a psychiatric rehabilitation center in Manhattan, then moved to London, where she worked for the NHS as a child and adolescent mental health practitioner. When she moved back to the states, she opened her private practice in Brooklyn.

Over time, her work has come to focus on the passage from high school to college, and she offers support in two connected areas: navigating the college application process and the transition from high school to life as a college student. If your family is approaching this chapter of adolescence, Liana would welcome the chance to talk about how she can help.
